Between maritime port, harbor, dock, and wharf, we have a lot of different tags for "place where ships land to load goods or passengers".

Technically they're all distinct features.

  • A harbor is the body of water ports are usually built in.
  • A wharf is a single fixture built on the coast for mooring.
  • A maritime port is an infrastructure project usually built in a harbor containing many wharves (among other constructions).
  • A dock is a smaller fixture, often wooden, frequently seen in smaller bodies of water like lakes for mooring a smaller boat.

There will be a lot of overlap between them since harbors often have ports, ports usually have wharves, and docks will frequently be around maritime construction. But not always, you could have a harbor with nothing in it (post #7622059, harder to find examples of given they're frequently associated with boats), a wharf where you can't see much else (post #5223767), a dock in a lake or something (post #10192862).
