Bring back beige background

BUR #25768 has been rejected.

undeprecate beige_background

Beige is a commonly used word for a "creamy" nearly white color as opposed to light grey. Not all "offwhite" backgrounds are grey- nor does "just tag with yellow/grey/brown" as per the wiki provide a suitable replacement.

I'd like it back to, along with the other beige tags, but unless there's a good solution to all the rampant mistagging I don't see a way to bring it baxk.

Establishing a guideline. Imo the best usecase is what some call "eggshell" post #5186067. A creamy near white color with hints of yellow or pink. But just like not every red is the same beige can have different shades. Very light pastel yellow pink may or may not be included for example.

These are perfect examples of beige imo: post #5186067 post #7347586 post #5164113

Darker unnamed yellow/pink color: post #5100928

Sure, I agree, but are people going to follow it? evazion disagrees: forum #209708

While I don't hate the idea of beige tags like beige background, that requires people to be able to actually know what beige fucking is, and considering the nightmare they caused when we did have them, I simply don't think most people who'd tag them do. So I think the beige tags should stay deprecated.

And no, guidelines won't help. If that's a serious suggestion for color tags, there's a huge problem and a good sign the tags should be deprecated. Or remain deprecated, as this case might be.

Guidelines hardly ever actually help anything. 95% of users never read the wikis, and 95% of the ones that do wildly misinterpret them in nonsensical ways. They really just exist so you can point to them when someone is screwing something up.

And this is just when talking about simple tags that should be simple to use. Color tags have several layers of potential misuse, whether it's an individual's color recognition, differences in monitor color display, or differences in how colors are named in different languages. Some languages just don't even have words for some colors. That's why we keep nuking them. Primary colors like red and blue already get polluted constantly despite how broad they are, the second you try to tag more niche colors any quality control goes out the window.

I'm somewhat in favor of bringing back beige, and you can find me ranting about beige clothes on discord, BUT sadly, as people have said in this BUR and on discord, there's no guarantee that everyone will use this color well.

On the contrary, even a cursory search reveals a plenty of evidence that beige shouldn't be used.

The reason we didn't nuke beige is partly because we need to replace that tag with another color, but I think it's also to show how misused that tag has been.

deprecate sepia_background

Thank you for pointing that tag out. It's just beige background 2.0, so we're better off getting rid of it before it balloons too big.

When I linked it in the Discord Fumi gave post #5413857 as an example, which admittedly is a pretty cool use of it, but I don't think sepia background would be a good tagname for that, I think the discussion in topic #26428 is more relevant to that.

Yeah, I agree. I feel like there should be a tag for...whatever sepia background was trying to be in theory (which is something like a reversal of greyscale with colored background + sepia), but in practice it turned into, well, beige background 2.0. Considering topic #26428 is about greyscale with colored background, I think I will move the rest of my thoughts there.

That set is a pretty damn good use of it too.

As someone who has cleaned several beige tags out the colors found in them range from green to dark brown and purple to yellow.

I could go on and on. Having an off-white would be nice, Beige isn't it and I don't trust people to use it correctly.

with a properly calibrated monitor, several of these aren't beige, but in fact purple or white (the one with Mio from K-on is definitely purple)

On my calibrated monitor none of those are what I'd call beige tbh

Yes exactly. The Mio one in particular is awful and there is plenty more like it in the beige_background tag because for whatever reason people just don't know what beige actually is.

Take a few more great "beiges"

Go to any page it's a hodgepodge. I've cleared out multiple beige clothing tags it's never used right and usually is clealy a color we already have a tag for. An off-white tag of some kind would be nice this isn't it.
