Yeah, I think that pool is for real life events such as political assassinations, space launches, plagues, gas prices and whatnot.
Anything that happened recently (in our timeline, in real life) could be a current event. Feels like the line is blurred if the reference is to something fictional. Sometimes the events are a little obscure. In any case, adding an explanation is really helpful because if only a few people know what it means now, imagine in the future when people forget the context.
