Part of the gnomes' natural life cycle. Their lives (as gnomes) were simply coming to an end, that's all.

On another note altogether, I like the implication that Sukuna could be a distant relative of the Huygen gnomes.

My sister had like 26 of the books for them. Used to read them all the time, so I get the reference.
