Is it a common problem for new mothers to be unable to give milk? The most common reason I can think of would be starvation, and in that case, a pilgrimage isn't going to help.

I think it has to do with hormone levels being unbalanced due to diet and stress. They say prayer is like meditation - it "harmonizes" the body and mind (or in biological terms: lowers psychological stress, thereby allowing the body to function under normal parameters). Well, you do have a point as well - starvation causes (physical) stress, thus would lead to a lack of lactation. I think it was meant for new mothers who aren't lactating properly despite all the preparations, where in that instance may be due to the stress of birthing.
