    That's why you cut out the base of the bulb first (toss the piece into a soup or something if you don't want to waste it). Or just julienne the whole bunch quickly with a sharp knife.

    Alternatively, chewing gum or bread works too (still stings, but usually you won't cry, thanks to the airflow). Useful if you're the type who likes to chew gum, otherwise, no.

    Goggles are for sissies. Soaking methods? Wastes flavor.

    They don't make me cry... then again, over half of my dinners have onions in them. I probably built up immunity?

    The effect comes from the vapors of the raw onion turning your tears to acid, so I don't think that's probably it.

    or you can wet the knife or freeze the onion for a bit

    They don't make me cry when I cut them. I savor the scent of cut raw onions.

    But Hoppo-chan is still adorable.

    If you have to soak it in water, you're doing it wrong.

    You only need to dunk it in a bowl of water after cutting it in half. Or, even better, run them under the faucet for a grand total of... 1 second. I've never had trouble with cutting onions since.
