Official same-sex marriages came into effect around March 2014.

The Civil Partnership Act 2004 , passed in 2004 and coming into effect in December 2005, allowed for civil partnerships in the United Kingdom with rights and responsibilities similar to marriage. The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act 2013 legalised same-sex marriage in England and Wales and came into effect in stages from July 2013 to December 2014.
