This is something that happened to my husband when he was doing a straight-magic playthrough (in the battle against the Sage).
It seems that even if you repel it and you go off screen, you can't cut off the homing. LOLOL
I was watching too from next to him, and it was just so absurd that the two of us cracked up. LOL
