    Hang in There Kogasa-san 2658

You decide character actions using attribute values determined in advance, so if you calculate those values and any correction values, and the dice roll is lower, the results are often failure. That's how it works.

There's also rules that say if you get a crazy-great roll of the dice in this, that's a "Critical" (major success), and a crazy-bad roll is a "Fumble" (massive failure).

There's all sorts of rules for this, like "If you roll 10% or less of the success value, that's a Critical", "If you roll a 100, that's a Fumble", "You can continue to roll and add values as long as you roll a 6", or "You can continue to roll and add values as long as you roll a 1".

Reader-added tags include "Happens a lot (at karaoke)", "Home Alone", and "Shoot for the opponent's goal (life)!!" (This and the strip's title refer to a Japanese commercial for the tabletop game Battle Dome.)

Ah, the joys of making either absurdly funny or absurdly morbid stories depending on what you rolled.

    Fumbles and criticals are fun.

Reminds me of a friend who wanted to stomp his opponent lying on the floor with his foot, only to fumble it. He missed the enemy and dislocated his ankle with he impact.

After roaring in pain, he then proceeded to make a DEX roll to see if he would lose balance and fall, only to get a critical on his roll. He stepped backwards with his dislocated ankle and got it miraculously fixed.

And thus, we have declared it the most useless turn in tabletop RPG history.

This does remind me of a great example of a critical failure, where a kobold managed to backstab his own tail and die

In one D&D game we had a magic dagger with a Hold Person enchantment on it. It would never hit unless it was an absolutely critical, do-or-die situation, so we ended up naming it the Dagger of Necessity.
