    To take the plunge or embark on is fumikiru, and a railways crossing is fumikiri

    Actually... reminds me of the well-known story of the eccentric Lord Berners. When he wanted a railway compartment to himself --- back when there were real compartments with corridors, not these wretched saloon things --- he would sit by the window, pull his hair over his forehead, and smiling, beckon people in as they passed along the platform.

    He was undisturbed.
