    Then there's the difference between hiyamugi and soumen! :-) I looked it up, and it's apparently the thickness.
    Specifically, soumen is under 1.3mm in diameter, while hiyamugi is 1.3-1.7mm. (Anything thicker is considered udon.)

    Menchi sure is a cutie, huh. Pitiable, though.

    I take it you haven't seen Excel Saga? The main character, Excel, is perennially starving as an aspect of her ridiculous bad luck, so she adopts this dog as an emergency food source, naming her Menchi. (Excel never actually eats the dog, of course, but not for lack of desire.)
