In my case, that whole 'nothing to fear but fear itself' is the main part of the problem - you worry about falling so much, you feel like falling just to get rid of the possibility of falling. It's that potential that makes the feeling of gravitational pull tugging at the back of your knees dig in harder, and you just keep creeping away from all edges just to make sure you don't give in to that gravity.

Having Acrophobia, I completely understand why they wouldn't want to go anywhere near that pit. *Shuddering*

My main worry is not actually falling, but having my glasses fall off or dropping something important. I never look down a high edge without a hand on my face.

I have Acrophobia as well, but that's mainly due to association with Vertigo and the fear of suddenly falling from heights. I'm somewhat OK with dropping out of a tower while wearing a jump harness, but that's more about reassurance that I won't end up a smear on the ground...
