Thank heavens for wiki resources; I barely know a thing about mahjong otherwise.

Generally, a lot of the terms don't get translated, especially the calls. Hands depend on which rulebook you're using. (I've played a lot of mahjong.)

(Note that Nue and Mamizou both are going for hands that are luck-based)

That would be Nue's choice of limit hand.

Why's Mamizou going full tanuki at the end there?

I was trying to be consistent; I figured if I translated the hand names but not the calls, it would look odd. (In my arguably misguided attempt to avoid extensive explanatory TNs, I attempted to integrate the meaning of the calls and hand names alike into the translations, but that was probably asking too much for something as involved and unfamiliar to many as mahjong.)

Having seen the structure of Nue's hand, I figured it would be heavily reliant on luck to form. I wasn't as aware of that factor in Mamizou's hand.

Edit: Got so wrapped up in explaining myself that I forgot to thank you for the help, so...thank you.

Moved the more extensive part of the explanation off the main bubbles to clean it up a bit.

Guys? That animal on the last panel isn't a raccoon. It's a Red Panda.

    Pon-
Claiming a discarded tile to make 3-of-a-kind.
    Tpp...
    Chakk
    ...to be underestimating me.
    It's 1000 years too soon...
The player opposite's probably got an open flush. If I discard a winner for her—bam—my points are in the red.
The left-hand player's discards are all over the place.
This can be combined with other hands, but because there's no need to have any semblance of structure, it tends to result in hard-to-read discards. You cannot take a discard to construct it; even if you had, say, two sets of 1-2-3, by taking a tile to complete them, they become "fixed" as that set and cannot be used in a 7-pair hand. There is some control over this, as you can decide what pairs to go for based on other players' discards and your estimation of how many of the tiles you need are left.
    ☆Thirteen Orphans!
A hand consisting of 1 and 9 of every suit, and one of every wind and dragon.
Is she going for seven pairs?
A special hand where you have 7 pairs of any kind.
This can be a "multi-sided" wait—i.e., you can be waiting for any one of several different tiles to complete a hand.
This hand that depends entirely on luck, as you cannot take any tiles from any player to construct except to win, and have a very limited amount of tiles that you can keep, which makes it also very easy to read the discards.
Yakuhai - a set that is worth points inherently, viz., any of the dragons, the round wind or your seat wind.
    Ron.
A win—specifically, one claimed from another's discard. This overrides all other tile claims, except another ron (in which case both players win).
My partner's looking like he'll be waiting for his winning tile soon enough too.
Tenpai - to have a hand that is one tile away from being complete.
I'll plug in a special-express ticketvalue tile and get a fresh start!
