    Hang in There, Kogasa-san 3552

I saw gameplay footage on Gamewave, Hikaru Ijūin's show for introducing video games, and the impact was incredible. The true high hurdles are yet to come! :-)

Naturally, buying all this for three people was out of the question!

I'm getting some real nostalgia vibes here, the PS2 is one of my fave game consoles ever and I had many fond memories playing on there when I was younger. I still own my PS2 along with the many great games for the console as well.

My level 75 (or whatever the cap is now) Tarutaru MNK nods in approval.

Back when my brother was in college, he and his live-in girlfriend (now his wife) played FFXI together on side-by-side PCs. Their linkshell decided to test out the swear filter by having one of them turn it on, the other have it off, and then everybody in the group just said whatever offensive words they could think of to see what got caught. Fun times.

The FFXI swear filter was both optional and completely client-side. And you only need to look at other games where that wasn't the case to see why.

Sooooo many games seemed to just buy an off-the-shelf filter and did zero testing or customization of it, ever. Almost like the dev versions of those games had the profanity filter disabled. It's the only way I can imagine that you could have in-game terms trigger the filter in disruptive ways.

And that's without getting into what happens when you mix a swear filter with text from another language.

I spent so much time playing FFXI. Started back in late 2005, and played actively (with a few breaks) up to around 2013. I still remember spending New Years Eve 2005 hunting leaches for the first part of the summoner unlock quest.

There are also many times when I find myself wishing I could have experienced more of the endgame back in the games peak, then I remember just how much drama there was in the small amount I did experience, and realise that I dodged an artillery shell of likely drama, things like the 2009 salvage dupe banwave and it's after-effects.

Honestly, the swear filter on some games mystifies me. PSN censors the word "gerber", which I still haven't figured out (discovered it because I typed "Gerbera" and the filter caught it). Not sure if it's a copyright issue with the baby food company since other copyrighted names like Coca-Cola are fine.

EDIT: Also relating back to the original story, they asked me for suggestions with the filter testing. Thanks to words I learned from Britcoms like "Blackadder", I managed to offend one of their guildmates.
