  • Ein letzter Rauch

    B型をイメージして描きましたが、実際には試作のみで実戦には間に合いませんでした。現存する唯一の機体は先行量産型のA-0型で、合衆国国立航空宇宙博物館別館に残されています。

    Ein letzter Rauch

I drew it with the image of the B variant in mind but, in reality, it was only a prototype and was not ready for the actual battle. The only existing aircraft is the pre-production model A-0 type, which is preserved in The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.

I don't think think this is in Africa, but more of an artistic sunset on a German airfield.... or at least that's how I saw it.

The German nickname for this aircraft is the Pfeil, or in English, Arrow.
It was NOT used in the desert theater.
It was used as a last ditch defense fighter (Much like the Heinkel He 176 Salamander).
    Max speed, 466 mph.
    Armament: 4 x 30-mm cannon
Crew: 1 (There are trainer versions, with a crew of two)

I think this falls under the "alterate history" genre, while using a real aircraft as the source/focus of the image. Though there were a few test flights of the first prototype in the 1940, no real progress was made until 43-45. The fuel can is something of a joke though, since the fuel capacity was ~260 gallons.

The plane itself had some amazing performance capacity for a prop driven plane, being (relatively)only a bit slower than a me-262. It's unique design seems to draw ppl to it like a moth to a light (just like the gotha go 229, aka flying wing) along with other odd designs the luftwaffe came up with during the course of the war.

Like many aircraft that could have been put into production if political pressure didn't hinder development so much, this would've been one really nasty guy to deal with. After watching a few alternate history animes (I've been reluctant to in the past) I can really see the appeal of the odd planes and the fixation around WWII in general; with it being the only modern war to be fought by convention means it can make for some very interesting plot lines due to the lack of doomsday weapons.
