Well, if the canon doesn't say what gender the character is (and it isn't blindingly obvious which gender they are) then 1other and androgynous should be the go-to as long as the fanartist didn't specify the intended gender (or, again, made it blindingly obvious).

As for a lack of signs of crossdressing, that just means that they could be pulling it off really well.
