how did you learn to translate? or rather how did you learn Japanese?
Well, I took some classes back in High School from which all I retained was hiragana, katakana, and a few basic commonly used kanji.
Other that that is basically having watched anime with subtitles since I was like...5 or something? So I've sorta unintentionally memorized some connections between commonly said phrases and their respective translations.
But really the trick is mostly just using references. Like, I know google translate is heavily maligned (deservedly), but I still do use it mostly for a general idea of the sentence structure. (Unless it's completely fucked the bed. Which is more than it should) Then I go to jisho.org to look up specific kanji combinations and words so that I can double-check everything, if there's something that doesn't read there properly or seems overly colloquial I google it and search around for an answer. Also I use a database of sound effects for reference too.
And then after I do all that, I write whatever sentence makes most sense to me. Or makes me laugh the most.
At the end of the day, learning any language is just a matter of practice. And that's what I've been using Danbooru for. Practice. If I make any fuck ups, I know someone will come along and correct it. Which I can then learn from. If I make any SPECTACULAR fucks ups, then someone'll usually message me and make fun of me for being an idiot. Which I can learn from.
But yeah, it's just practice. If you've got someone to teach you then you can learn even faster. Luckily I know a professional Japanese teacher to run the harder stuff by. And get mocked for being an idiot.
The major problem is the way I'm doing it I'm mildly confident on japanese-to-english, but I have zero confidence on english-to-japanese. And forget about speaking it! It'd be a nightmare! But I can also get better at those. With practice. And being an idiot.
But yeah. Translating literally just boils down to practicing. What is it, 10,000 hours of practice to be a master at something? I'm still only at like, 1,000 or something. Practice!
Also looking stuff up. And asking for help. Those are important too. Never be afraid to be an idiot.
