I love how the wolves(?) have giant creepy smiles.
May even be shapeshifting Tanukis. Youkai are known to be creeoy and mischievous, which would fit with the uncanny humanlike smiles.

Looks like standard rural hero training by having to fight monsters by herself. It would explain why she's so good with a sword.
