I guessed months ago (comment #2457107) that this would end in a party wipe. The hope spot was really cruel, too. I wish the pink-haired rookie had survived.

I actually had to think of your comment when I saw the new chapter. I had also guessed this chapter would be the end for the last human in the party and that'd be the end of it. However, it doesn't feel like the story ends here, even though there is no more human left in the party.
It would have been great to see even one party member successfully stand up to a mimic. The only victory we had was when the red haired knight fought the "gargoyles" the mages had turned into. But even then that was only chasing them away, not a true victory.

I agree with you. From start to finish, it was basically the monsters always winning. It was a foregone conclusion that felt less than earned. The warband struggled a little, but all died futilely. It would make sense if they were all rookies, but several flashbacks showed these people were supposed to be veterans. The pink-haired rookie escaping alive would at least let humanity prepare for the inevitable infiltration. Instead, it'll be just pointless massacres where all resistance is futile.
Since the monsters were shown to be outside the dungeon as well. I question how humans survive in this world at all.
The easiest answer is that these are humans. The monsters are mages that turned themselves into inhuman forms, or were cursed to be such.
So far, they haven't attacked civilians, just soldiers. Perhaps they are fighting the other monsters on the surface because of that with intentions of ruling, not destroying human society. Who is to say, the story leaves a lot of questions unanswered.
