The show is infamous for being adapted from three unrelated Japanese anime series — Choujikuu Yousai Macross, Choujikuu Kidan Southern Cross, and Kikou Souseiki Mospeada — with their plots and dialogue rewritten to form a new cohesive storyline. While footage and characters were used from these shows, the Robotech storyline is distinct and separate from each of them.
The story spans three generations, beginning with the discovery of an alien ship, which provides advanced technology used to create transformable mecha called Veritech to defend Earth from alien threats.
It was first syndicated to American TV stations in 1985 and a few years later in several other countries across the world. It was quite popular during its first time of release in the West, as many anime fans of that era thought it was made of original content (which it wasn't).
In 2006 an animated film titled The Shadow Chronicles was produced; this was an original film, not an adaptation of a previous anime.
