layered kimono

十二単 十二単衣

An extremely elegant and highly complex kimono that was first worn by court ladies in the Heian period of Japan.

This includes the juunihitoe (十二単衣, "twelve-layer robe") and other robes that have fewer layers (usually five).

Kimono undergarments are known as juban (襦袢).
