Alot of times, it's usually a contract that stops artists from drawing "Fan art" of their own projects.

Especially big ones. The larger the name you have in the industry, the more restricted you are. Akira Toriyama for example has to be careful he doesn't do anything with Dragonball because the companies don't want people to mistaken something from the author as new canon.

Hell, even alot of the Kancolle Artists now aren't allowed to draw "Fan art" of Kancolle anymore now that it's gotten almost mainstream(it'll never be fully mainstream but it's at least a pretty big cult following now).

Hoo boy I can't wait for them to animate these two.
