Especially with older models, there's a "maximum safe setting", and there's a "maximum setting the therostat will allow you to crank it to", and these two don't overlap. Oftentimes, people who don't understand the limitations of the machine and are hot will just crank it up to full blast and fry the motor. (Happened often at one of my first jobs, even though the other employees were explicitly told not to touch the thermostat...)
