...was there a Spirit flying over an island in AC:Z? Admittedly that's the one I've played the least but I recall it mostly having older bombers. Only places I remember seeing B2s were the bombing of Hoffnung and maybe the paradrop on Solus Ortus.

One is crashed on the mountain in Japari Park. You can see its wreckage in episode 11 or 10, along with a ton of rusted, undetonated bombs.

...I haven't seen any of the anime yet, but it sounds a lot less fluffy than I originally believed.

Hmmm... yes and no. It's hard to explain, just watch until around episode 4 or so and you'll start to understand.

It's in the background, like most of those little details. The show usually doesn't address it.

About halfway through the first episode, joshing with the duders in Discord about how it looks like an early MMD. But I knew that much already.

This isn't a specific Fail Safe reference, but black and white imagery of a bomber crew approaching a target which is home to the pilot's family among countless other civilians certainly evokes it.
