The fan base never really cared for Honolulu. Zara only proved this fact and as you can see, the fans and even official artists have no problem proving that. All that had to happen was for the artist to make a non American ship look just like Honolulu for the fans to jump ship. I guarantee that if another non American ship came out and looked just like St. Louis, the "fans" would jump ship just as fast as they did with Honolulu.

As defined by the London Naval Treaty, light cruiser can have guns no greater than 155mm (6.1 in), while heavy cruiser guns up to 203mm (8 in).
Fun fact: the Kirov-class is classified light cruiser despite having 180mm (7.1 in) cannons, which exceeded the defined limit for light cruiser. This was because Soviet Union was not part of said treaty.
