She's putting that away from the loading hole because the fuse can drop embers into the opening, causing premature discharge.

It's usually called slow match in this context (also why this style of lock is a matchlock).

This artist really did their guns research. It looks like they understand how all the mechanisms work and weren't just copying it blindly.
