They effectively gave free rein to use what they thought was a worthless dud of an IP to what they saw as just some small minor studio with the expectations that absolutely nothing of worth would come of it. That small studio of course magically turned it into a critical success. As typical normal management logic of course follows they did everything possible to regain control of the IP, and then have the expectations that they could keep it successful for milking regardless of whoever they have make the product.

It is a big shame, honestly. When the old umamusume mobile game closed down and the anime turned into a big success, they didn't bothered reviving it. What we got is barely the same thing people saw.
