Aliases vs. just fixing the tags

Posted under General

Are there any guidelines for when simply correcting the tags that exist is preferable to submitting an alias?

See forum #11218. miyamoto_ryuuchii to miyamoto_ryuuichi is simply a matter of someone making a typo when they added the former, so far as I can tell. There are only 20 posts. None in about 2 months. Does it really need an alias, or can we just fix the posts that exist and be done with it?

While ambiguity probably wouldn't be much of an issue in the above case, I'm wary about creating aliases unnecessarily because we could wind up creating conflicts down the line.

Mostly out of curiosity, is there any reason to be conservative with aliases like that? I mean, I can understand the issue when the tag might be used at a later date, but there's no way that would happen in this case. Are aliases processor-intensive or something like that?

Not processor intensive but why have them if they're not needed? I wouldn't say there's "no way" that alias could cause a tag conflict. Pretty much anything that's a valid ordering of Japanese syllables has potential for ambiguity, however small.

I don't like the idea of aliases being the first line of attack in every situation, when a one-time tag edit does the job just fine. I see them as a tool to use in specific situations, not a default reaction.

When searching you can also use the wildcard * to see if you spelt it generally right, in case you're looking for something and don't find it. I tend to do a wildcard search before uploading things too, just incase.

Hi all, I hope this is the right place to ask a maybe-stupid question:

I Just noticed that there is a tag "mismached_footwear" with a count of 8, which is obviously a typo of "mismatched_footwear", count 456.
Is it OK to change these 8 posts or would that break anything?
If it's OK, I would just correct all mistyped tags I spot in the future.
Should I do that or rather not?

'K, thanks. :)

A four-year-old thread might not have been the best place, but anyway, yes, that's fine.

This thread came up when searching for "typo" and it seemed to be quite on-topic. I totally did not look at it's age and decided to put my very first post here instead of creating a new thread. I have to get used to how it's done here. I'll learn...

For those future cases, just make sure it's not a misunderstanding on your part.

I promise to be careful :)
