I've been staying clear of threads about player characters because I wasn't sure myself on how to proceed, and I was hoping evazion would've eventually chimed in, but since he hasn't...
I think if the player character is nondescript and featureless, typically it's fine to make gendered tags for it and imply both to it***. If the player character is instead a defined character on its own, such as Fujimaru Ritsuka****, then it doesn't make much sense to have an umbrella tag just for the sake of it.
ใ*** Unless the character is predominantly and overwhermingly depicted as having a specific gender, in which case having an umbrella tag for a 30k post tag and a 500 post tag is a bit ridiculous
ใ**** I'll admit there's still the question of how to deal with posts where you can only see the hand and you don't know if it's one or the other (post #5676573), and I am really not sure how we should deal with those. It really doesn't make sense to have a 22k posts umbrella tag just for a handful (?) of borderline posts.
I'll do the neural cloud professor implications for now because it's a small tag, and because I can already see it having the same problem of edge cases, such as post #6905759.
BUR #22637 has been approved by @nonamethanks.
create implication male_professor_(neural_cloud) -> professor_(neural_cloud)
create implication female_professor_(neural_cloud) -> professor_(neural_cloud)
As above

And so, a new era of rule-lawyering is on the precipice, as "predominantly and overwhelmingly" is at a point where people can argue about the lesser common player protags, such as Commander (Girls' Frontline)/Female Commander (Girls' Frontline) (~1.5k/~600), while keeping the likes of Commander (Azur Lane)/Female Commander (Azur Lane) (~3.5k/~100) or Admiral (KanColle)/Female Admiral (KanColle) (~37k/~5.5k) out of reach in discussion (technically Producer (Idolmaster) too because no one made a female tag).
Rejoice!

Not quite understanding the logic here. Why give the professor an umbrella tag despite that both KJ and FemKJ have unique appearances?
BUR #52010 has been rejected.
remove alias commander_(girls_frontline) -> commander_(girls'_frontline)
create alias commander_(girls'_frontline) -> male_commander_(girls'_frontline)
remove alias commander_(girls'_frontline) -> male_commander_(girls'_frontline)
create implication male_commander_(girls'_frontline) -> commander_(girls'_frontline)
create implication female_commander_(girls'_frontline) -> commander_(girls'_frontline)
create implication non-human_commander_(girls'_frontline) -> commander_(girls'_frontline)
With the decision reached in topic #33941, finally giving us not just Female Producer and implying it to Producer, that finally puts into question the other gendered protag tags which maintain a seperation between the two tags. Since I'm the GFL maintainer, I'll start where it is obvious, and there's two options to go with.
The first one is going the maximalist route: make it obvious that the Commander tag is for male commanders, and then imply it, the female Commander tag, and also the non-human Commander tag to a shared parent tag. The reason why I propose this first is for one simple reason: costume tags. In OG!GFL, they sold costume sets with which you could customize your Commander with, of which the most prominently represented on Danbooru is Journey in the Auspicious Snow. They also recently announced a skin for the Commander in GFL2, and it would be confusing if both the male and female Commanders got tags for them, but only one of them specified which gender.
BUR #52011 has been rejected.
create implication female_commander_(girls'_frontline) -> commander_(girls'_frontline)
create implication non-human_commander_(girls'_frontline) -> commander_(girls'_frontline)
The simpler solution is just lumping everything together under one tag, with the expectation that the aforementioned GFL2 skin is going to be specifically for Commander (Girls' Frontline) and that if you want to see female Commanders wearing it you'd specify that in your search.
Whichever is accepted, I already gardened relevant posts to have dual persona and multiple persona to ensure you can still search for depictions of female Commanders with male Commander.

You sure?
Producer at the time of writing has about 10k posts, to Female Producer's roughly 60. If that implication is acceptable, there's nothing stopping someone from implying Female Admiral (KanColle) to Admiral (KanColle) or Female Commander (Azur Lane) to Commander (Azur Lane).
0.5 seconds into pressing the enter bar and I realised you were talking about old protagonist tags. The current standard is usually to make both male and female tags and have them under one umbrella or not implicate them together, as is the case for Fujimaru Ritsuka (Male) / Fujimaru Ritsuka (Female) and that one Fire Emblem protagonist from whichever game in the series it was. So I was mainly thinking you were calling those ones into question, not old ones.

Ah, I thought that the preceding context within the thread would've made it clear I was talking about the old ones, sorry. You're good.

After requesting that the BURs be given a second look, I was told by evazion that the reason why there had been no approval is because he wanted to avoid setting precedent. He requested that we take "stock of what we're actually doing for each different game," since we aren't entirely consistent at the moment.
The following list is organized in game release order:
This list does not take into consideration non-gacha main characters, so something like forum #349563, forum #349566, forum #349569, forum #349573, forum #349606, and forum #349610 for Fire Emblem, forum #385862 for Wii Fit Trainer, or similar is out of the scope of this list.
Each of these player characters have different circumstances associated with them and different tagging trends which have impacted how they've been organized.
