mass update id:11280683 -> flashing_eyes

This is for when the eyes flash/sparkle/light-up when the character notices something. Or when they are going to do something. Or just to signal their presence. It's like they got "activated".

The example has the eye flashing from the dark/shadow but it doesn't have to be. I'm not sure if we also need a subtag for when the eyes flash in the dark/shadow specifically.

This should be distinct from sparkling eyes, + + or eyes in shadow.

Added a few more posts, but this kind of stuff is really hard to find. @gzb relevant wikis should be updated so that it's discoverable.

I think it would be best to update all of the wikis you mentioned with a showcase of these different types, so that anyone trying to figure them out has an immediate visual reference sheet.

There's also newtype flash which has to do with "noticing" or "sensing" something and it has a realization flash alias: it might be the concept you're looking for if you're talking about the effect on Doodle Sensei's head. The wiki has a list of other types of manga-like effects like this so if you needed to find them, you've got a few here.

Flashing eyes better fits the other posts that were added to the tag than the effect on Doodle Sensei's head, unless I'm just a bit blind and miss where there's other glowing eyes in the image.

Nevermind. I looked over the image a few times and I see the aim; it's the eyes under the desk.

I updated the relevant wikis @nonamethanks.

The distinction is supposed to be something like this:

  • star-shaped pupils - five-pointed star (⭐), in the center of the eyes
  • star in eye - five-pointed star (⭐), not in the center of the eyes
  • +_+ - four-pointed sparkles (✨), in the center of the eyes
  • sparkling eyes - four-pointed sparkles (✨), not in the center of the eyes
  • cross-shaped pupils - literal plus sign (+), in the center of the eyes
  • cross in eye - literal plus sign (+), not in the center of the eyes?

So if we wanted to be consistent, +_+ would be sparkle-shaped pupils (and imply symbol-shaped pupils) and sparkling eyes would be sparkle in eye (and imply symbol in eye). But these are all subtle distinctions and trying to get people to follow them is pretty hopeless.

I understand the core difference after reading the wiki, but I feel the current name can be somewhat misleading?
If the star should fully or nearly cover the eyes, wouldn't it be better to just use star-shaped_eyes, in the vein of heart-shaped eyes?

Flashing eyes would be sparkle-shaped eyes, since as I understand it they're supposed to be sparkles (✨) rather than stars (⭐), and other tags make a distinction between the two.

Well examples in wiki of star-shaped pupils do contain a "Dark four-pointed (star)"(post #9461642) example and also six-poined ones like characters form oshi_no_ko, so I thought "star" here didn't specifically refer to a five-pointed star?

As I understand it, the emphasis in "sparkles" is on multiple four-pointed stars. And +_+ specifically refers to that visualize technique for conveying character's excitement; if the character's permanent pupil shape is four-pointed stars, then star-shaped pupils should be used.
