Artist's commentary

  • Original
  • I find myself perplex’d by the dilemma, whether my fair lady-soldiers ought to be represented in their grande tenue or tenue de campagne. The former with all its ornament and ceremony, conveys the pride of the regiment and the cause for which she fights; yet the latter though humbler in appearance, conveys the individual character and personal history of the wearer.

Good heavens, who dressed you up this morning? What's a bronze age spearwoman doing here?
Hang you, you swaggering rascal! Do wenches wearing washing-poles from Sate on their heads have the right to speak? As far as I can tell, 佐手/Sate may be referring to the Ryuukyuuan fishing/mango-growing village of the same name, or a person I'm unfamiliar with (perhaps a character of the artist's?). Either way I'm not sure what the significance is. My first thought that it was either a neologism or an archaic word for something like 'washerwoman,' but I can't find any evidence of the latter, and I don't think it's the former
