It's an old game, that tends to be overshadowed by more famous Squaresoft and Enix RPGs for the SNES. Which is indeed kind of a shame, because PSIV is pretty amazing.

You know, I pretty much played all the old FF's, the DW/DQ's, PSIII, and PSIV. As a kid, my favorite was probably whatever I was playing at the time. But... all these many, many long years later and I can still name off pretty much all the main PSIV characters and give you a reasonably detailed breakdown of the story. Can't say that about any of the others except PSIII and that not nearly so well.

It's the only game in the series I've played, but from what I've heard, it's more or less the best one. Definitely holds up when compared to other 16-bit classics like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6, too. Very likable characters, especially for a RPG that old, and surprisingly good storytelling. I genuinely felt sadder about a certain character dying than I usually do when games kill of main characters for pathos points.
