Small game developers shouldn't bite off too much.

More like they should make accurate representations of gameplay for trailers and not go full hype so far from launch.

This. Sean Murray got caught up in his own hype, started making promises about features in the game - some vague, some quite explicit - and then when it came time to lay the cards on the table his studio had no way of delivering everything he'd talked up. If he'd been clear in his mind about what features the game would have from the get-go and just said 'no, we're not including that' more often NMS wouldn't have been such a publicity fiasco. Instead he hedged his bets and never outright said no to anything, leading us to the current situation.

But then maybe if he hadn't they wouldn't have got so much attention and therefore money...? I mean, NMS is the top-selling game on Steam right now. Maybe lying and stirring up a s***-storm IS the right thing to do because people are so lacking in any kind of wisdom or foresight. I have some hope that the gaming community might learn from this and be more cautious about swallowing hype in the future, but not much.

If the internet hasn't learned by now that the final product never lives up to it's trailers and/or hype, i don't think they'll ever learn.
Give me 30 seconds on google and i could find a list of games before NMS that pulled the exact same shit, and no lessons learned, every time.

First thing that comes to mind is Mighty No.9.

Gamers are idiots what else is new? The games fine as is but gets a boring after a couple hours.
It's a decent game nothing to get triggered over and it's a fresh face in a sea of constant sequels of shit like Gears, Battlefield, COD and Halo.

I'm reminded of Spore, every game graced by Peter Molyneux (though I genuinely think he really tries), MGS2, MGS4, MGS5, Liru, Hellgate London

Especially Hellgate London, that was wasted fucking potential and a slap to whoever bought the lifetime deal

It's funny looking at this comment section now, when no man's sky is a game beloved by many because despite the games launch, they kept through and redeemed the game
