Poor Hornet, she doesn't deserve such amounts of bashing.
Her design is pretty neat, her personality is nice, her seiyuu does a great job and she's fairly useful at what she does (she's not to blame for having been outclassed by Saratoga (after retrofit that is), Essex and now...Shangri-La).

I can only hope that she's given a badass retrofit one day,the poor lass needs it... and deserves it.

You'd wonder what the Eagle Naval Command is thinking when giving Hornet those clothes as Yorktown and Enterprise are... err.. 'normal' ish

However, I must humbly oppose the explanation on how this phrase got in the Chinese lexicon, as I feel that has more to do with net culture, particularly with manatsu_no_yo_no_inmu and its subcultures.

Thanks. Yeah, in retrospect I can see it being confusing if one parses it as a Chinese word, with 风评 meaning "public reputation" instead of "rumor"/"gossip", and 被害 sorta hanging around there like a sentence fragment.

谣言受害(者) would be more easily understood (for a Chinese speaker encountering the word for the first time), but it doesn't quite have the same punch.

Manatsu no Yo no Inmu was also (IIRC) how the meme became widespread in Japan during its early days (enough for "Inmu" to be considered a subcategory of memes), and I can see it spreading to Chinese Internet users as well. I just thought it was kinda niche among Chinese speakers and mostly restricted to anime/manga/game fans (and only used in the meme sense), with the word only being brought into (limited) public perception by the 2011 newspaper reports. That being said, I would certainly defer to your judgment in this matter, as you are far more familiar with Chinese media and Internet websites/social media than me. Feel free to correct the commentary as you see fit.

Well the translation and the interpretation of its meaning is absolutely right, there is no doubt about that.
The key here is, the original meme was an internet meme in Japan, it is only natural that the Chinese net society got to it first. Only after a certain meme became extremely popular online, would the other media pick it up and trying to sound cool. So if you see an internet meme appears in any news media, there is a fair chance that it is already a has-been meme on the internet.
tl;dr Internet always get it first. Meme spread trend: Internet -> Netizen -> Common Media -> Non-netizen -> Central Government Mouthpiece
