Artist's commentary

  • Original
  • Inspired by all the amazing photos from the protests in Hong Kong. They are fighting for their freedom and democracy against China’s encroaching totalitarian rule. As someone born in China and having seen all the horrendous abuse of power that happens without democracy, my heart is with the people of Hong Kong. I hope they will achieve their goals of freedom and inspire others to also fight for their rights to democracy.

Its a shame that the protesters are unlikely to get much international support other than well wishes.

Yeah, they made the fatal mistake of trying to court foreign support (which can't afford to come because China is too big a player on the international stage to alienate) while alienating potential support from other factions within China (because post-colonialism national PTSD is a thing here and Hong Kong protestors have done several things to trigger it, ensuring that factions that would otherwise enthusiastically support them are taking the Party's side for fear of losing national cohesion or fear of being taken advantage of by the West again), rather than the other way around. I wish them the best, but this won't end well.

The biggest thing is that with the trade war going on, its more than likely that Hong Kong's fate will be given up if the US feels like it is going to get a better deal.
