Danbooru does not use diacritics (accent marks) in tags. This is for ease-of-use reasons, because, well... nobody wants to memorize alt codes or switch keyboard configs or mess with combining characters or search-online-and-copy-pasta-the-letters just to type an Ä when tagging and searching for characters.

(And this is coming from someone who has multiple such characters memorized and uses them semi-regularly in translation notes and wikis.)

See topic #18932. Also compare with the chartag Hermann Wilhelm Goering, which isn't spelled Göring for the same reasons. Using ae/oe/ue as an alternate way of writing ä/ö/ü is a pretty common standard practice in both English and German sources.

Note also that the umlaut double dot was originally a superscript "e" (itself derived from a normal 'e'). Pronunciation-wise it is also often somewhat equivalent to adding an additional "e" after the attached vowel.

Anyway, wrote a wiki for Aegir (Azur Lane) to clear up this misconception.

TL;DR: Ägir is correct but impractical. Aegir is also correct but practical. Agir is flat out wrong.
