In Terraria, many statues spawn objects when given a signal with a wire. Star statues spawn mana stars that restore your MP, heart statues spawn hearts that restore your HP, bomb statues spawn lit bombs. But the treasure chest statue doesn't spawn treasure as one would expect, it spawns a Mimic, a tough enemy that you don't normally encounter until later in the game.

But you actually WANT to spawn mimics, since they have good equipment drops, which can be turned into stronger artifacts by fusion.
Case in point for Philosopher's Stone.

Except that Mimics that are spawned by statues never drop loot.
