The heavy cruiser was caught unawares so her crews were probably very confused at the enemy's direction.

The Quincy was firing on the Japanese Task force. The book Diaster in the Pacific is a detail account of what happen. Commander Ohmae attributed the hit on the Chokai operation room to the Quincy. Killing 34 men and burning all the charts. That lead to the decision of the Japanese Task force leaving the area. Commander Ohmae wrote, "From a group of three enemy ships the center one bore out and down on us as if intending to ram. Though out her entire hull from amidships aft was envelopef in flames, her only forward guns were firing with great spirit. She was a brave ship, manned by brave men.... She certainly made a impression on our force." The Quincy made the Ultimate Sacrifice. She served with Honor.
