I don't know enough about Cybertronians "biology" to rule it out, so I'll say, "Perhaps they simply can?"
I'm pretty sure in the original cartoon energon is basically alchohol to them. It's also their source of power. So they're basically robots fueled by alchohol, who waged a million year long war for more booze.
