Well, it was all fun and laugh when it was just "haha this girl say something that sounded like N-word" until people took it literally and depict her as a full-on racist character.

I just watched a video of a Momoi cosplayer say some absolutely ridiculously racist things to IShowSpeed, in person. I'm assuming they were just a joke, because of how they were saying it and what they said, but fucking hell the stuff they were saying was just..... ***WHAT?!***

The racist Momoi joke has DEFINITELY gone too far.

I’ve heard lots of anime characters “say” the n-word. Though in many of those cases, they’re just saying “ じゃねか” at the end of a sentence. Not sure why people would focus on this character in particular.

She's a gamer prone to bouts of salty rage when things don't go her way. Since some English-speaking gamers have a tendency to spout racial slurs when frustrated (including some notable Youtubers/livestreamers, with one just so happening to also wear pink cat-eared headphones...), this lead to some Western fans portraying Momoi using the N-word. Then someone edited an originally innocuous clip of Momoi with an AI dub saying the N-word repeatedly, leading to the meme exploding and Momoi quickly being portrayed as a full-blown racist.

Poe's law the ironic gets taken over by the ridiculously sinsere etc. so this now becomes less of "haha funny edgy gamer moment" to "American celebrity suffering blatant racist abuse in China" because to anyone else outside your fandom bubble the "jokes" become completely incomprehensible.

it doesn't help that racism is so *extremely* pervasive and normalized in Chinese internet and society, with acquiescence from the government, that such a thing was just bound to happen. i remember a while ago a Chinese VTuber saying the n-word on air and refusing to apologize when criticized because racism was so extensively normalized she failed to grasp how offensive and contemptible her actions are. so now Chinese ultranationalists are both doubling down on their racism and in full denial by attacking a random japanese cosplayer, smearing her as the racist momoi cosplayer in question, forcing her to issue a trilingual notice proving her innocence.

and this all happened because a innocent character design gets hijacked by an unrelated attribute and flanderized beyond recognition. this is beyond stupid. and thank god this is only verbal abuse and Speed himself was understanding and patient. if someone gets assaulted or hatecrimed for this meme the BA community will get remembered for this forever.

Okay, okay, calm down. One person taking a joke too far is not the fault of the entire community. Most people that aren't already actual racists know better than to shout slurs at strangers in public because of a poor taste meme. It's not going to be the community's fault if someone gets assaulted, either. That's like saying those multiple instances of children trying to kill each other because they were obsessed with creepy pastas is the fault of the creators of the stories.
