keffiyeh

Keffiyeh (Arabic: كوفية‎ kūfiyyah) is a traditional Middle Eastern square-shaped headdress which is generally worn on the head or around the neck. Can be plain or often features distinct pattern that resemble houndstooth, fringed or not.

If the keffiyeh-like pattern is visible on a turban, this tag can apply.

There are many different terms to refer to it:

• Arabic: ghutrah (غُترَة), shemagh (شماغ), ḥaṭṭah (حَطّة), mashadah (مَشَدة)
• Kurdish: cemedanî (جه مه داني‎)
• Persian: chafiye (چَفیِه‎), dastmal yazdi (دستمال یزدی‎)

Examples

Worn like a shawl. Traditionally white-black and white-red.

With an agal.

Covering the whole head and face.

Palestinian-style keffiyeh with loose fishnet-like pattern, worn like a scarf.

Modern, "tactical" keffiyeh with unconventional coloring.
