I think thinking of South Carolina would be a general east coast thing, since I don't live in the Carolinas and still did not even consider So' Cal' until I read the comments.

Here in the Philippines, USC means University of San Carlos and I could still remember the first time I've ever seen a Venus Fly Trap when the Biology Department held a show of their plant collection. Also the first time I saw a Sun Flower.

I remember hearing that here in Socal USC is refered to as "University for spoiled children" and is a place where people with money send their otherwise poorly behaved in school offspring. So USC(ultimate sadistic creature) teaching at USC(university for spoiled children).
