Does anyone know if retrieving equipments out of dead soldiers a common practice back then? Seems like a huge waste to me to give this much tool to a single soldier

This is the bare minimum required. Uniform, weapon, helmet, ammo pouches, magazines, canteen, mess kit, shovel, gas mask, weapon cleaning kit, shelter quarter (tent piece), eating utensils, toothbrush, comb, lard container, other toiletries. The bare minimum for civilized survival. Not seeing how that's over the top.

Yeah it's really bare considering how much crap everyone lugs around today.
