Looking at the spots on the hair, tail and hair, I think it is actually a Hyena.

Also, considering that he aparently cant die by drowning or lack of food, and that he can still think, this is one of the scariest tortures anyone can suffer.

Although she calls herself a shaman, she looks more like a witch or a perhaps an exiled druid to me, both of whom are usually seen more for cauldron magic and alchemy. Gnoll magic users typically fall in the faith caster category, usually depicted as lacking the diligence to be a studied arcane caster (and are rarely natural casters) or the insights to be an occult caster.

Which is why her magic is probably so clumsy.

My concern is that the dude is still conscious a prisoner in his own body doomed to float the void of space eternally and that is by far the most frightening thing I could ever imagine

This kind of feels like that time in 8 Bit Theater where, after Blackbelt died, all these fans kept pointing out the second Blackbelt created by a temporal paradox (caused by getting lost in a straight corridor) could just be un-petrified until the author (who probably killed off Blackbelt in the first place because he couldn't think of good gags to use with him and just didn't want to deal with him) decided to have White Mage try it, only to have it result in a ludicrously overblown gorefest and a "THERE, he's TOTALLY KILLED OFF FOR REAL now, so SHUT UP ABOUT BLACKBELT!"

I.E. people on DeviantArt or Twitter were feeling sympathetic for this kid, so the artist is lashing back with more and more over-the-top sadism.

Fair enough, I suppose, but pointless cruelty was entirely in-theme for 8-Bit Theater.

This just proves the Artist is a bit of an asshole for doing this.

He's probably going to be picked by by a cute alien girl, get unpetrified and then go an an intergalactic journey with said cute alien girl.

That would be disproportionate retribution pool. Harsher in hindsight is for meta (and a new image would not be harsher in any hindsight because it is new), not in-universe cases. The image with the gorgon turning the boy to stone already has the former pool tagged to it, so this doesn't need to go into either pool.

By the off chance that the comic only made that joke for the sake of the reference and anything could change from one page to another based entirely on the whim of the artist. Who knows. Maybe the guy was a reference to an obnoxious person on public transportation and shepherd0821 wanted to make sure to punish and kill that guy off in his comic as a stress relief.
